The Silverado Franklin Historic Hotel, one of the oldest and most iconic hotels in Deadwood, South Dakota, is undergoing a major renovation. The nearly $10 million project, the first large-scale update since the building opened in 1903, will touch on every corner of the hotel, including 73 guestrooms, 10 standard suites and four luxury suites. The completion is slated for summer 2025.
The revitalized property will blend its storied architectural legacy with modern-day comforts; guests can expect redesigned layouts, contemporary furnishings, luxury finishes and in-room amenities to elevate their stay. Of note? Each guestroom will now include its own private bathroom, an upgrade from the hotel’s earliest days, when many rooms were built without them.
Public spaces, including the hotel’s corridors, will be redesigned to enhances the overall experience while celebrating the original architecture. Built atop a natural spring and steeped in local legend, the Silverado Franklin remains a vital part of Deadwood’s story, once hosting iconic figures like John Wayne, Theodore Roosevelt and Babe Ruth, as it embarks on a new chapter.
Chamberlin Architects is leading the renovation, renowned for their expertise in restoring and renovating historic buildings while honoring their architectural integrity. The planned remodel will include carefully reworking the layout, including tearing down walls to optimize space, enhancing guest comfort and improving acoustics. The updated design calls for floor-to-ceiling rounded windows and custom curved glass at the corners. Existing windows throughout the building will be restored to maintain their timeless charm.
Natural elements inspired by the surrounding Black Hills are central to the design story. Warm light wood stains reflect the tones of local pine, while green hues evoke the region’s towering pine trees. Custom sconces, designed to resemble hand-held candles, offer a nod to the candlelit ambiance of the early 1900s.
Classic slot machines, table games and the Poker Room have long been part of the history and tradition of the Silverado Franklin. These gaming experiences will remain unchanged.
