Spirit Airlines ceased operations early Saturday morning, leaving hundreds of thousands of travelers scrambling for alternatives — and prompting a wave of rescue fare offers and hiring initiatives from competing carriers.
Spirit Aviation Holdings announced the start of an “orderly wind-down of operations, effective immediately,” canceling all flights and advising guests not to go to the airport. The company cited a high fuel prices as the breaking point following a restructuring effort that had been underway since March 2026, when Spirit reached an agreement with bondholders that it had hoped would allow it to emerge as a going concern.
“Sustaining the business required hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity that Spirit simply does not have and could not procure,” Spirit CEO Dave Davis said in a statement.
Spirit had served 72 airports and operated 67 nonstop routes at the time of shutdown.
Customers who purchased tickets with a credit or debit card will receive automatic refunds to their original form of payment. Those who booked through a travel agent should contact that agent directly. Refunds for bookings made with vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points will be addressed through the bankruptcy process; customers can visit spiritrestructuring.com for updates.
What the Major Carriers Are Offering
- American Airlines moved quickly, saying it has put rescue fares in place on Spirit routes where it also operates nonstop service. The carrier noted it serves 70 of Spirit’s 72 airports and 67 of its specific routes, and said it is reviewing opportunities to add capacity — including larger aircraft and additional flights on critical routes. Customers can book directly through the American app or at aa.com. American has also launched a dedicated microsite for displaced Spirit employees interested in joining its team and said recruiting events will be held in coming weeks.
- Delta Air Lines is offering reduced, nonrefundable fares in affected markets for the next five days, including on flights that are close to full. The fares are available to all customers — not only those directly impacted — across domestic markets where Spirit operated, including nonstop and connecting itineraries via Delta hubs. Delta has also extended the offer to U.S.–Latin America routes where Spirit flew. Spirit pilots and flight attendants can access standby travel on Delta for the next 10 days under existing agreements, and qualified employees are invited to apply for open roles through a dedicated careers microsite.
- United Airlines is offering price-capped, one-way fares for the next two weeks at united.com/specialfares. Most fares are capped at $199, with longer-haul routes priced no higher than $299. To access the fares, customers must provide their Spirit confirmation number, proof of purchase for travel between May 2 and May 16, and a United MileagePlus number — new members can enroll for free instantly. Spirit employees will receive pass travel benefits on United for two weeks and can apply for open positions at united.com/SpiritEmployees.
- Southwest Airlines is offering discounted fares on overlapping routes, though only through ticket counters at departure airports through 11:59 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, May 6. Pricing is tiered by mileage: $200 for flights up to 500 miles, $300 for 501–1,000 miles, and $400 for routes over 1,000 miles. Discounted international fares are also available. Spirit Silver and Gold status holders can apply for a status match to Southwest’s A-List tier.
- Frontier Airlines, which currently operates more than 100 routes previously flown by Spirit and plans nine additional routes this summer, is offering up to 50% off base fares through November 19 using promo code SAVENOW at FlyFrontier.com or on the Frontier app. The discount applies to Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday travel with a 21-day advance purchase; a 10% discount with no advance purchase requirement applies to other days. Frontier is also offering a $199 GoWild All-You-Can-Fly Summer Pass to impacted travelers.
- Avelo Airlines is offering up to 75% off base fares across its network through November 17, 2026, using promo code TRYAVELO at AveloAir.com. Spirit Saver$ Club members can also status match to Avelo PLUS at no cost through May 31. The ultra-low-cost carrier is actively hiring and will hold a recruiting event for displaced Spirit employees at its McKinney, Texas (TKI) base on Saturday, May 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST.
- Allegiant is offering 50% back in Allways Rewards points on qualifying itineraries rebooked through May 12, 2026, for travel through July 20, using code ALLWAYSTHERE at checkout. The carrier, which competes with Spirit on a portion of its routes, said it will also temporarily hold fares steady across overlapping markets.
