Survey: 90% of Top-Performing Travel Advisors Are Women

Women are shaping the travel industry as both its primary entrepreneurs and its most powerful consumers, according to new survey data from Nexion Travel Group, a premium host travel agency.

The survey, released in conjunction with International Women’s Day, polled members of Nexion’s Circle of Excellence, MillionAir and Advisory Board — representing the company’s highest-performing travel advisors. Ninety percent of respondents identify as women. The dominance extends into agency staffing as well: across all respondents, including male advisors, 70 percent report that at least 76 percent of their agency’s employees and independent contractors are women.

The findings point to an industry where women are not only building businesses but creating economic pathways for other women within them.

For the advisors surveyed, entering the profession was a deliberate entrepreneurial choice rather than an accidental one. Respondents cited three primary motivations for launching their travel businesses: the opportunity to travel, the ability to own their own business, and the chance to achieve greater work-life balance. The results suggest that the travel advisor model — with its relatively low overhead and professional independence — is increasingly viewed as a viable and attractive route to entrepreneurship.

Women’s influence in the industry is equally pronounced on the consumer side. Respondents reported that 64 percent of their clients are women making travel decisions on behalf of others, reflecting the substantial purchasing power women hold in the travel marketplace. An additional 15 percent of bookings originate from female group travel, while 11 percent are solo female travelers.

“It is not surprising to see so many of our top producers are women or that their agencies are powered by women,” said Jackie Friedman, CTC, VTA, president of Nexion Travel Group. “What’s especially exciting is how these advisors are building successful businesses while cultivating strong female client bases and creating agencies where women can thrive professionally and economically. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s clear that travel continues to be powered by women.”

Nexion Travel Group is a host agency providing support, resources and back-office services to independent travel advisors across the United States.
