United Airlines is bringing back its nonstop service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Madeira‘s Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, with flights resuming May 16 — roughly three weeks ahead of the 2025 launch date.
The route, operated three times weekly between Newark and Funchal, gives North American travelers direct access to the Portuguese island without a European connection. Service runs through the end of September, and flights are bookable now through United’s standard channels.
The Newark-Madeira route debuted in June 2025 as part of United’s broader international expansion push and quickly became a key transatlantic link for the island. The earlier 2026 start date extends the viable booking window for advisors putting together spring and early summer itineraries.
For clients who miss the nonstop window or are traveling outside the seasonal schedule, Madeira remains accessible year-round via connections through Lisbon, Porto, London, Madrid, and Paris.
The island draws travelers with a mix of dramatic volcanic coastline, a UNESCO-listed Laurisilva laurel forest, and a culinary scene that has steadily built an international profile. Funchal serves as the main hub for arrivals.
